Clinical Utility:

The CBC is a blood test used to evaluate overall health and detect a wide range of disorders, including anemia, infection and leukemia. In addition to use as a screen for a broad range of abnormalities, the CBC may be used to monitor a diagnosed medical condition, or to monitor the effects of therapy on blood counts.

COLLECTION AND HANDLING:

Collection Instructions:

One lavender tube (EDTA). If the specimen will not be tested within 24 hours, also submitted a freshly prepared blood film. Blue top (sodium citrate tubes) may be used to determine the platelet count in specimens with EDTA-related platelet clumping. In this case both one lavender and one blue tube should be submitted. Stability: 24 hours (optimal), 48 hours (acceptable) if refrigerated. 12 hours (optimal), 24 hours (acceptable) at ambient temperature (15-30 degrees C). Minimum volume: Optimal draw is a standard (12X75 mm) vacutainer tube filled to capacity. Mix well immediately after collection to prevent clottings. A minimum of 1 mL is recommended. Collection into an EDTA micro-collection tube is acceptable, filled above the 250 uL collection line (500 uL volume optimal).

Specimen Labeling:

Refrigerate if testing will not be performed within 1-2 hours.

Rejection Criteria:

Samples with clots/fibrin strands. Frozen or grossly hemolyzed specimens. Samples drawn from above an IV (potentially spurious due to dilution). Samples exceeding time stability limits.

Specimen Retention Time:

Surplus samples are saved 7 days in the refrigerator.
