Flow Cytometry, Plasma Cell MRD

by | Jan 20, 2023

GENERAL INFORMATION

Test Name:

Flow Cytometry, Plasma Cell MRD

PC/NPS Test Code:

PC MRD

CPT Code(s):

88184 + (88185 X 9) + 88188

Methodology:

Flow cytometry.

Sensitivity of this assay validated to 0.001% clonal PCs,
reported as a percentage of nucleated cells.

Days of Week Performed:

M, Tu, W, Th, F

Routine TAT:

1-2 days (excluding weekends and holidays)

COLLECTION AND HANDLING:

Collection Instructions:

Typically performed on bone marrow, though other specimens can be tested. BONE MARROW: Transfer 1-3 mL into a lavender tube (EDTA), or directly into a tube of RPMI media. Green (heparin) or ACD (yellow) are also acceptable. A bone marrow biopsy placed in RPMI media or saline can be used with pathologist approval. Specimens which have had fixatives added (e.g., formalin or PAP fixative) cannot be used for flow cytometry. Prepare bone marrow slides from the fresh specimen, especially if the specimen will not be tested the same day. Also include blood films and a copy of the CBC if available. For other specimens, see collection instructions listed for the ‘Flow Cytometry, Leukemia/Lymphoma/Myeloma’ test.

Collection Containers:

Varies by specimen type. See above.

Specimen Transport Requirements:

Refrigerate if testing will not be performed within 1-2 hours

Specimen Labeling:

Label containers and slides with two patient specific identifiers.

Rejection Criteria:

Clotting. Freezing. Specimen age. Incorrect specimen type. Insufficient cells for analysis. Poor cell viablity. NOTE: For irreplaceable samples (bone marrow, tissues and body fluids), testing will be performed on sub-optimal samples whenever possible. A pathologist will then decide whether to report results with a disclaimer, or have the testing cancelled.
